Autism College Teaching Assistant

We are currently working in partnership with a specialist Further Education setting for young people aged 19–25 with a diagnosis of autism and additional learning needs, to recruit dedicated Teaching Assistants.
The school’s mission is to help learners prepare for independent adulthood, develop employability skills, and build the confidence to lead healthy, fulfilling lives. They provide a highly personalised approach, ensuring each student’s programme reflects their interests, aspirations, and EHCP outcomes.
Having visited the school myself — including attending their Christmas Fair and Craft Fair — I can genuinely say it is a beautiful, supportive environment. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff truly enjoy working there. There is a real sense of community, collaboration, and pride in the work they do with their learners.
We are seeking enthusiastic and compassionate Autism Support/Teaching Assistants to join this highly skilled team. You will work closely with teachers, job coaches, and therapists to deliver personalised programmes that support each student’s development, independence, and wellbeing.

Your Role
As a Teaching/Support Assistant, you will:
Provide 1:1 and small-group support across vocational, academic, and enterprise sessions.
Help students develop work skills, independence, and confidence through hands-on activities.
Support learners in community-based work placements such as cafés, shops, museums, and other employers.
Accompany students during off-site activities, helping them build independent travel skills and navigate real-world environments safely.
Promote health, well-being, and emotional regulation, encouraging students to make positive choices.
Assist with teaching Functional Skills (English, Maths, ICT) and other accredited Entry Level courses.
Build positive, trusting relationships so learners feel safe, valued, and understood.
Work collaboratively with teachers, job coaches, and the wider support team to track progress and celebrate achievements.Every day brings new opportunities to help students move closer to independence and employment.
What We’re Looking For
GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
Experience supporting autistic children, young people, or adults – or a strong interest in SEN.
A calm, empathetic, patient approach with a genuine commitment to person-centred support.
Confidence supporting learners both on-site and in the community.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Passion for helping young people build life skills, self-belief, and independence.What You’ll Gain
