Temp job FAQs

How is temp agency work paid?

Most temp jobs are paid weekly, either through the agency's own PAYE payroll or through an umbrella company the agency works with. Either way tax and National Insurance are deducted before you are paid, and you get a payslip. Ask which model the agency uses before you accept an assignment, and what the umbrella's margin is if there is one.

Do temps get holiday pay?

Yes. Temporary workers accrue paid holiday from day one at 12.07% of hours worked, which is the statutory 5.6 weeks pro rata. Some agencies roll it into the hourly rate and some pay it when you take leave; your payslip or assignment schedule should say which.

What changes after 12 weeks in the same job?

Under the Agency Workers Regulations, after 12 weeks in the same role with the same hirer you are entitled to the same basic pay, holiday and working conditions as a directly employed colleague doing the same job. Some rights, such as access to the canteen and to job vacancies, apply from your first day.

How much notice do I get on a temp assignment?

Assignments can usually end at short notice on either side; the notice period, if any, is set out in the agency's terms and the assignment schedule rather than in employment law. Check the assignment paperwork, and expect one to five days in most sectors.

Can a temp job become permanent?

Often, yes. Many employers use temp-to-perm arrangements to trial staff, and some listings say so. If you are offered a permanent role by the hirer the agency may charge the employer a transfer fee, but that is between them; it cannot be taken from your pay.

What documents will an agency ask for?

Proof of your right to work in the UK (passport or share code), proof of address, National Insurance number, bank details and references. Roles in schools, nurseries and care need an enhanced DBS check, and driving jobs need your licence, CPC card and tacho card where they apply.

Do temp jobs show hourly or daily pay?

Most temp listings quote an hourly rate; some quote a day rate and a few an annual salary. Each job on this board shows the pay exactly as the recruiter advertised it, so compare like with like before you apply.
