SEND Teaching Assistant – Complex Needs
Location: Hackney, East London
Start Date: ASAP
Contract: Full-time, Long-term
Pay: £90–£115 per day, depending on experience
Are you an experienced SEND Teaching Assistant passionate about supporting children and young people with severe and complex learning needs?
TeacherActive is recruiting a caring and resilient SEND Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Hackney. The school supports pupils with a wide range of additional needs, including SLD, PMLD, autism, complex medical needs, physical disabilities and communication difficulties.
Many pupils have limited or non-verbal communication and require highly individualised support throughout the school day.
The role will involve:
Providing 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with complex SEND
Supporting pupils with SLD, PMLD, autism and communication needs
Using alternative communication methods, including PECS, symbols, visual aids or AAC
Supporting sensory and engagement-based learning activities
Helping pupils develop their communication, independence and life skills
Providing personal care and mobility support where required
Managing behaviours calmly and positively
Working closely with teachers, therapists and other SEND professionals
Following individual EHCPs, behaviour plans and care plans
We are looking for someone who:
Has previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND or complex needs
Is patient, compassionate and resilient
Is comfortable supporting pupils with personal care
Can build positive relationships with non-verbal and minimally verbal learners
Has strong safeguarding awareness
Is reliable and committed to a long-term position
Holds an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or is willing to obtain one
Experience with Team Teach, Makaton, PECS, sensory learning, manual handling or medical needs would be particularly desirable.
