About this job

We are seeking an experienced Column and Boom Operator to join our clients fabrication team. The successful candidate will operate a column and boom welding manipulator to produce high-quality longitudinal and circumferential welds on medium pipework such as pressure vessels, storage tanks, pipe spools, and structural steel assemblies.

Key Responsibilities

* Set up and operate the column and boom welding manipulator, including positioning the column, adjusting boom height/reach, and aligning the welding head or torch to the joint

* Load and monitor welding consumables and replenish as needed during runs

* Read and interpret welding procedure specifications (WPS), blueprints, and work orders to determine joint preparation, travel speed, amperage/voltage settings, and pass sequence

* Coordinate with crane/rigging crews and positioner operators to load, rotate, and position workpieces for optimal weld access

* Monitor weld quality in real time, adjusting parameters (voltage, amperage, travel speed, wire feed) to maintain consistent bead profile and penetration

* Perform visual inspection of completed welds and flag defects for rework

* Complete routine maintenance and cleaning of the manipulator, torch, and associated tooling; report mechanical issues promptly

* Maintain accurate production and quality records, including weld logs and traceability documentation

* Follow all workplace health and safety procedures, including fume extraction, PPE use, and hot work protocols

Qualifications

* Proven experience operating automated/semi-automated welding manipulators

* Solid understanding of welding fundamentals:

* Ability to read technical drawings,

* Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety standards
