Senior / Principal FPGA Engineer
12 month contract Inside IR35 – 3 days p/week on site (multiple site options) - SC Eligible
Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior / Principal FPGA Engineer to join an engineering team working on complex systems within the Aerospace and Defence sector.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development and verification of FPGA solutions, working closely with Systems, Hardware and Software teams.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop robust VHDL-based FPGA solutions
Verify FPGA designs using VHDL and/or SystemVerilog
Work closely with Systems, Hardware and Software teams on integration
Analyse system/hardware requirements and derive detailed FPGA requirements
Debug FPGA designs and support hardware/system-level integration and verification
Specify timing and area constraints for efficient FPGA Place & Route
Maintain configuration and revision control of FPGA designs
Document technical deliverables and provide project progress updates
Make technical decisions and identify/mitigate FPGA design risks
Coordinate technical activities with engineering leads and other disciplines
Essential Skills & Experience
Strong experience developing FPGA designs using VHDL and/or Verilog
Experience with Mentor Graphics tools, including HDL Designer, ModelSim / Questa and Precision
Familiarity with Xilinx, Intel (Altera) and/or Microsemi (Actel) design flows, including Vivado, Quartus and ISE
Experience with timing/area constraints, synthesis and Place & Route
Experience with independent FPGA verification using VHDL
Experience with FPGA requirements capture and requirements management
Understanding of FPGA version and revision control
Experience debugging FPGA designs and supporting system/hardware integration
Ability to analyse system-level requirements and translate them into FPGA requirements
Strong communication skills and ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering teams
Desirable Experience
Real-time, embedded or safety-critical FPGA development
Experience with RTCA/DO-254 DAL A or DAL B
SystemVerilog / UVM verification
Aerospace or Defence experience
Embedded processor cores such as ARM within FPGA designs
Knowledge of modern FPGA device families
Experience working within an Agile environment
